How Businesses Can Be Greener in 2020
Implementing green practices within your business will lower your company’s environmental impact while generating a positive social impact. Some companies believe that switching to more environmentally-friendly practices is a daunting task. However, there are a few simple hacks that can dramatically decrease your footprint and foster more sustainable business practices. Here’s how to be greener in the new year.
Provide Convenient Disposal Options
Staff will be more inclined to dispose of trash in the proper receptacles when it’s easy and convenient to do so. Our environmentally conscious state provides plenty of recycling, composting, and waste disposal companies that focus on reducing trash. Sustainable office supplies, like compostable and recyclable cups, compostable utensils, and napkins made from recycled material are affordable and can be scheduled for routine delivery, so you’ll never run out. Go one step further and reuse any composting waste in a spring and summer garden to cultivate fresh, healthy vegetables.
Encourage Reusable Items
With the holidays and end of the calendar year in our midst, now is a great time to provide your staff with environmentally-friendly gifts. Unique lunch boxes, insulated water bottles, and coffee tumblers and thermoses make fantastic stocking stuffers or secret Santa gifts that are just as enjoyable to receive as they are to use.
Cut Out Energy Waste
Examine the office to detect unnecessary energy usage. Turn off computers that are not being utilized. Install motion activated lighting in common areas of the office and make sure bulbs are LED to maximize efficiency. Set the HVAC system on a timer so it adjusts to a comfortable temperature before employees arrive to work and lower it each evening before heading home for the day.
Promote Carpooling and Public Transit
Many companies offer their staff public transportation stipends to reduce automotive emissions and free up parking. This affordable and gracious incentive is easy to implement and will help employees use less of their resources on gas and car maintenance. During the hottest months of the year, encourage carpooling by offering incentives to employees who ride share.
Upgrade and Donate Electronics
Donate any outdated or unused electronic equipment taking up precious storage space in the workplace. Certain large donations can act as a tax write-off and you’ll save money by not paying for disposal of hazardous materials. Schools, children in need, and nonprofit organizations may benefit from your unneeded computers, keyboards, and other hardware. Plus, you’ll have more room to upgrade to energy-efficient, streamlined technology when the time is right.
Apply for LEED Certification
Now more than ever, companies have a variety of options available to promote sustainable and healthy work environments. Working toward LEED Certification is one important way that companies can implement green initiatives and changes throughout their physical workspace and office atmosphere. Inspiration for your Holiday and New Year’s Office Parties
It’s that time of year again! The fourth quarter is wrapping up and holiday cards from friends and colleagues begin to cover the office display. The holidays are quickly approaching, and there are so many options for hosting a holiday party to thank your team for a job well done. Everyone feels festive during the last few months of the year, and it’s a great morale booster to invite that spirit into the workplace. Here are some ideas to spark inspiration for your end-of-the-year holiday office parties.
Enjoy a Winter-Themed Cooking Class
Many cities offer a plethora of alternative activities like cooking classes. Look for ones that provide interesting, engaging lessons and involve preparing delicious themed meals. Reserve an entire class and enjoy an alternative approach to the classic holiday party.
Host a Cubicle-Decorating Contest
Throughout the month of December, get the staff excited about the holidays by planning a cubicle decorating contest. Offer prizes for first, second, and third place. When the time comes, have everyone vote on the best décor and award prizes during a festive office holiday party.
Go on a Team Outing
Take the crew out for an afternoon on the town by signing up for engaging team-building activities. From Topgolf and food tours to escape rooms and archery, group events boost morale and inspire creativity that employees will bring back to work in the new year. Give your staff an end-of-the-year celebration they’ll remember.
Volunteer Together
There’s no better time to give back to the community than during the holiday season. Schedule a volunteer outing where employees serve dinner at a homeless coalition, visit children in the hospital, or walk dogs at the shelter. There’s no better bonding experience than volunteering and helping to improve others’ quality of life.
Bring the Party Inside
Set aside a day for a communal office potluck. Coworkers will love the chance to show off their treasured family recipes or baking prowess. As a bonus, this event is easy to set up and doesn’t add too much pressure to an already hectic time. Staff can relax, enjoy a home-cooked meal, and chat about holiday plans.

The History and Importance of Thermal Paper
It takes all types of innovative tools and supplies to help a business run smoothly. In fact, some could not run successfully without the implementation of thermal paper. This special paper is utilized in point-of-sale systems, credit card terminals, cash registers, and more. We share everything you need to know about the history, significance, and uses of thermal paper for your Denver business below.
What is Thermal Paper?
Thermal paper is a unique type of paper that fits into corresponding printers, adding machines, or credit card terminals, and its components allow it to change color when exposed to heat. Thermal paper usually appears slicker than routine copy paper, has a slight sheen, and can be difficult to mark with a pen.
The Invention of Thermal Paper
Renowned companies 3M and NCR Corporation developed the first direct thermal papers in the mid-60s. Shortly after, Texas Instruments, a leader in computing technologies, released the first thermal paper printer named the Silent 700. Other notable companies, including Hewlett-Packard and Nintendo, created their own type of thermal paper and corresponding printers over the last several decades.
How Does It Work?
This useful paper employs chemical coatings that change colors when the paper is exposed to heat. First, a base coat is applied. This initial layer acts as a binding agent and allows the heat to move through the entire thickness of the paper. Next, the active coat contains select chemicals that will turn either black, blue, or red when exposed to heat. Finally, the entire roll is coated with a final sealant that prevents fading. When the thermal paper roll is inserted in the correct printer, the print head applies heat directly to the paper and creates a legible receipt without the use of ink.
How to Choose the Correct Thermal Paper
Thermal paper comes in many sizes and it can even be offered in a few varying colors. Some companies find it helpful to have thermal paper that can display text in black, red, and blue for maximum legibility. Before ordering thermal paper for your business, consider what and who will be using and reading your thermal printouts. To keep employees and customers safe and healthy, select BPA-free thermal paper as frequent contact with BPA has been shown to have negative health effects. Finally, determine the size of the roll you’ll need and order in bulk to save on cost.
Thermal paper is found in a variety of industries due to its ability to eliminate ink use and reduce waste. EON Office provides high-quality, BPA-free thermal paper to many Denver businesses. Our team of experts will discuss order options, price breaks, and can schedule future deliveries to ensure you’ll never run out of this crucial supply. We love helping businesses succeed by providing superior office products at affordable prices. Give us a call today to learn more.
