Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center
The main lobby design for Presbyterian/ St. Luke’s Medical Center was inspired by the Colorado landscape. A cohesive design was achieved by using contrasting fabric in a color palette of browns, blues and greens. Special consideration was taken in selecting the fabric and furniture, due to the high volume of people who use the space each day. Seating groups were planned around the center of the open lobby to create a focal point and to allow for a circular traffic pattern. Supplementary seating groups were placed in front of the large floor-to-ceiling windows that energize the space with natural light. The end result is a soothing and welcoming atmosphere to comfortably accommodate thousands of daily patients and visitors.
Office Desk & Workstation Care, Part 2: Caring for Desks & Work Surfaces
Now you know how to fix issues with your desk drawers; how about keeping the rest of your desk in great shape? Caring for your desk or workstation will ensure lasting beauty, peace of mind and continued performance of your office furniture. With the proper care, your investment will retain its high value for many years to come.
Here are some helpful tips for proper desk & workstation care:
- Clean all surfaces frequently with a mild soap & water dampened soft cloth; always wipe with the grain.
- For darker-colored finishes on desks, Windex is ok to use as a cleaner if streaks are visible from water.
- If a spill occurs, immediately remove liquids with a blotting action, not a scrubbing action.
- Lift objects; never pull or drag them across a work surface.
- For an additional safeguard, use a protective desk pad. This single item could ensure a lasting finish by protecting your furniture from possible damage caused by pens or sharp objects.
- If using a protective glass top, place spacer pads under the glass to allow the wood to breathe.
- Avoid exposing furniture to extreme heat or cold; also avoid wide humidity variance.
- Avoid exposure of furniture to strong sunlight. Prolonged exposure may change the color of wood beneath the finish.
- Do not expose to harsh solvents (nail polish remover, acetones, etc.) as it will cause the finish to deteriorate.
- Do not leave plastic or vinyl items on the finished wood surface. Sustained contact may cause deterioration of the finish and require refinishing the entire surface.
- Avoid using furniture polish on wood surfaces as it can cause clouding in the finish.
- Use Goo Gone to remove glue from labels, tape or stickers (or other glue messes).
- Goo Gone is also useful to remove grease, crayon, oil, lipstick or mascara.
- To remove chewing gum from your office desk (or chair, or anything else), use a can of compressed air by turning it upside down and spraying the liquid directly on to the gum. This will instantly freeze the gum, making it brittle and easy to crack and remove. Be careful not to get any liquid on your hands, it is very cold and can result in a “cold burn”.

Office Desk & Workstation Care, Part 1: Fixing a desk drawer
At one time or another, we've all faced frustration with a desk drawer. Tricky as they might seem, most drawer issues can be fixed quite easily in just a few steps. If you are experiencing a sticky drawer, or a drawer that magically keeps sliding back open on its own, or other issues with your office desk storage, try these simple tips for a quick fix:
Desk drawers that will not shut or that roll back open- Typically this is due to the risers on your desk that are out of alignment. Risers are the small round dials on the legs of the desk that change the height of the work surface. (These can easily get misaligned if a desk was recently moved). To adjust, simply turn the riser clockwise or counter clockwise to raise or lower the height of that area or until the drawer will shut on its own. Be sure to add load to the drawer before you do this.
Fixing a “sticky" desk drawer that is hard to open- This often results from a congested drawer where the contents are catching on either the slider rails or the work surface above it causing a jam. It can also be from a dent in the guide rail, a failed roller wheel or a detached support rail. Determining the cause is crucial, and if possible, removing the drawer is the easiest way to find the problem.
How to remove a desk drawer- Most office desk drawers can be removed by doing one of the following (depending on the manufacturer, methods might differ but one should work):
- Pull the drawer all the way out toward you until it stops. Holding the outer edge closest to you, slowly pull the drawer up and it should slide out of the rail channels.
- Pinch Tabs Release- Look for 2 tabs on the drawer rail. While holding the drawer with both hands, push the tabs inward while pulling toward you, releasing the drawer.
- Push Tab Release- Look for 2 tabs on the drawer rails. Instead of pinching these, while holding the drawer with 2 hands, try pushing them either up or down, both in the same direction while pulling toward you, releasing the drawer.
Once the drawer is out, inspect the areas mentioned above and repair or adjust where necessary.
