A Look Into the 6-Hour Workday

6AX1OZQJCG

An 8-hour workday is pretty typical across the United States, but what if we were to cut out a couple hours of work every day? While this may sound like a fantasy, the 6-hour work day is actually gaining a lot of momentum in Sweden. Many companies in Sweden including Toyota, app developer Filmundus, and the Gothenburg’s Svartedalens care home are finding great success with a 30-hour work week for their employees. Linus Feldt, CEO of Filmundus, offers his  take on why a 6-hour work day is beneficial: “My impression now is that it is easier to focus more intensely on the work that needs to be done and you have the stamina to do it and still have the energy left when leaving the office.”

We all know that working too much can be detrimental to our health, and a recent study from The Lancet suggests that we are 33 percent more likely to have a stroke if we work 55-plus hours a week. Working just 30 hours a week in the United States could lead to more time spent with family, and more time for exercise and getting to enjoy the outdoors; but 6-hour workdays could also prove to be very challenging as they would require razor-like focus and being able to block out distractions like social media. While a 30-hour work week certainly won’t work for every employee, it is an interesting concept and might start garnering serious thought outside of Sweden.

Are you for or against the concept of a 30-hour work week? We would love to hear your input!

How Football Boosts Office Morale

Fall is officially here, and football season is in full swing! While we typically associate football with life outside of work, it can have an impact on our work culture as well. Here are a few ways watching football can help bring an office closer together.

FAO-Spirit-Week

#1: Workplace Fantasy Football Leagues

Fantasy football is immensely popular these days, and there is a good chance some of our coworkers are in a fantasy football league. By creating a workplace fantasy football league, it gives employees a constant opportunity for dialogue and allows them to share in fun and competition. Everyone will want to have bragging rights at work when their team is doing well.

#2: Community

The nature of sports is to help bring people together with a shared set of beliefs and interests. Through watching football, we can build a sense of camaraderie and all cheer for our respected teams. Football is also great for office viewing parties, inside or outside of our working areas.

#3: Water Cooler Talk

Visiting the company breakroom can be a bit uncomfortable when one is a new employee or doesn't know a coworker too well. Football can be a tremendous ice breaker and can bring out a real dialogue between two people who learn they have a shared interest.  Football is also great to discuss before a long meeting to get people more excited about the task at hand.

How does your organization unite through football? We would love to hear about it!

EON Launches Environments Denver

DENVER Sept. 17, 2015 — As the building boom and economy in Denver continue to thrive, and with more and more businesses and entrepreneurs both relocating and establishing themselves here, there is a greater need to create dynamic spaces that support the workers inside. Environments Denver, previously a service provided by EON Office, is now its own division providing comprehensive solutions for workplace interiors by offering a full range of services from product selection, space planning and design to move management and leasing. Environments has differentiated themselves in the industry with their highly involved team of in-house interior designers as well as their position as a manufacturer-neutral company.

“Environments can help refresh or newly design the furniture and décor of any commercial space, under any budget, and with any style in mind,” said Elena Sirpolaidis, CEO of EON and Environments Denver. “We looked at the options available for businesses who are remodeling offices or starting from scratch in a new location, and saw a niche as a manufacturer-neutral company, which means we don’t represent just one manufacturer. Through Environments, our clients have access to over 150 manufacturers depending on the budget and objectives of each individual project.”

Environments Denver provides a one-stop-shop solution for office interiors from carpet, paint, furniture and signage, to artwork, sound masking, and architectural walls. Their team of five in-house designers are hand-selected for each client based on the client’s individual needs and style. Each designer is personally in touch with every client throughout the design process, from start to finish, so there is no middle man.

“We know the importance one’s workspace has in daily routines, efficiencies and overall job satisfaction,” said Sirpolaidis. “Through Environments, we can create any type of commercial space to support and leverage our clients’ unique vision.”

Environments supports clients in a variety of industries including corporations, education and healthcare facilities, nonprofit organizations and local and national government.

“We take pride in the long-lasting relationships we create with our clients,” said Sirpolaidis. “It is our goal to work together to help our client’s workplace be more productive, and to continue to support their business beyond their office design project.”

Environments is a division of EON Office, a woman- and family-owned company with a more than 40-year history in Denver.
